Dallas Morning News: “We strongly recommend voters return U.S. Rep. Van Taylor to office”

Because of his consistent focus on bending Congress away from its upward arc of partisan failure, we strongly recommend voters return U.S. Rep. Van Taylor to office.

Since winning office in 2018, Republican Taylor, 48, has been a model of reaching across the aisle to Democrats to achieve results that have a positive impact. He worked with Democratic U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey for example to bring a new veterans hospital to Garland.

His focus on getting members of Congress to just get the basics done is what most Americans want regardless of party.

Taylor, a Marine war veteran and businessman, is a member of the Problem Solvers caucus, a regrettably small group of common-sense moderates who must at times feel overwhelmed by the inability of Congress to even address American legislative problems, much less solve them.

Taylor’s importance in this area is detailed in the little things he does.

A headline in this newspaper once labeled him “Mr. Bipartisan” for having the temerity to openly speak to Democrats inside the House.

He also tells a story of introducing a Democratic representative to a Republican representative. The two congressmen had both served as Army Rangers in the same regiment, yet had never met. Think about that. And as you do, recall that the historically productive Congressional sessions in the years after World War II often involved people of different parties who had shared backgrounds in service.

Taylor is running against Democrat Lulu Seikaly, a 34-year-old labor attorney and relatively recent arrival to the district. Seikaly describes herself as a pragmatic progressive. We would put the emphasis on progressive.

Taylor is the stronger choice.
